Partner in the Spotlight: ETEP Research Group, University Complutense of Madrid (UCM)

The ETEP Research Group (Aetiology and Therapy of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) plays a pivotal role in the NOMAD project. Led by the esteemed Prof. Mariano Sanz, this multidisciplinary team of more than 30 researchers focuses on understanding and addressing complex oral health challenges, such as periodontal and peri-implant diseases.

Key Areas of Expertise
ETEP’s research spans oral microbiology, bacterial-host interactions, and innovative therapies for gum and peri-implant diseases. The group has a strong foundation in clinical trials, investigating the efficacy of novel surgical techniques and therapeutic interventions. Additionally, they are recognized for their dynamic dental biofilm model, which is instrumental in evaluating implant performance in both laboratory and clinical settings. This model allows them to assess osseointegration and implant longevity while exploring solutions to prevent peri-implantitis.

ETEP’s Role in NOMAD
Within the NOMAD consortium, ETEP is conducting rigorous testing of newly designed implant and abutment surfaces. Using their validated models, the team evaluates these surfaces to ensure they promote effective osseointegration and resist bacterial colonization. These insights are vital for the project’s goal of enhancing dental implant technology.

Prof. Mariano Sanz: Driving Innovation
Professor Sanz brings decades of expertise in periodontology and regenerative medicine to the project. He has authored over 480 publications, received numerous awards, and is a leading figure in the European Federation of Periodontology. His leadership ensures that ETEP’s contributions to NOMAD are both scientifically rigorous and clinically impactful

Stay tuned as we delve deeper into how ETEP’s groundbreaking work is shaping the future of dental health innovation!
